The right depth for your child's age
Depth is the first decision in a children's pool and the one we are asked about most. The working rule is that a child should stand with their whole head clear of the surface without tilting their chin up — not just reach the bottom on tiptoe.

Children outgrow a pool faster than the pool wears out. That is why we prefer a graded floor — or a beach entry starting at zero — over a single fixed depth: a one-depth basin suits exactly one age, then becomes too shallow for the child it was built for within a couple of years.
Water temperature: the constraint nobody mentions
This is what kids-pool guides written for other climates leave out, and in Saudi Arabia it matters more than much of what they do cover.
A small shallow basin holds little water relative to the surface area the sun reaches, and has no depth to keep a cooler layer at the bottom. So it tracks air temperature instead of resisting it: it warms through the day far faster than a full-depth pool in the same yard, and does not cool overnight enough to make up for it. The smaller and shallower the pool — that is, the better suited it is to a young child — the stronger the effect.
The practical consequence: shade is not a styling choice on a children's pool, it decides how many hours of the year the pool is actually usable. A fully exposed kids pool in the centre of the Kingdom is reduced, at the height of summer, to early morning and after sunset. A pergola, a shade sail, or simply a position that catches the building's afternoon shadow gives the middle of the day back.
So we ask which way the yard faces and where its shade comes from before proposing where the basin goes. We also suggest keeping a simple thermometer in the water: small children do not complain about water that is too warm the way adults do, and they tolerate heat stress less well.
Separate basin or attached to the main pool?
The second decision after depth, and the one that sets both cost and running conditions.

Attached is cheaper, which is why it is the common choice. But note the last row: putting a children's pool alongside a basin two metres deep means a child who has reached the shallow one is a single step from the deep one. A real raised divider, or distance between the two, earns its cost here. A token low wall does nothing.
Fencing and barriers: what actually works
Drowning in young children is silent and takes minutes, and in most cases the child was never going swimming — they reached the pool on their own. So what stands between them and the water matters more than anything inside the pool.
None of this replaces direct supervision. Barriers buy you the time you need to notice; that is their entire job.
